Description
In 1954, Shostakovich was contacted at a sudden to compose opening work for the concert celebrating the 37th anniversary of the Russian Revolution. He managed to finish the work in just three days and the successful premiere took place on November 6, 1954. That work is the famous Festive Overture, Op. 96.
Inspired by Shostakovich’s Op.96, Two Days Overture were modelled in a similar way: starting with the brass opening fanfare then followed by the lively high-speed music. Two themes were employed in this work, one fast-paced and the other more lyrical.
For this piece, when I was doing my undergraduate in composition, I was inspired by the story above and tried to compose the piece in a similar manner: short overture, full of energy and with such a limited amount of time to work on the piece. Here it is, the result of such attempt!
